Chit Chatting with Actor Josh Flitter
Written By: Jill Sheets

Recently I had the honor of interviewing actor Josh Flitter. Continue to read and learn more about him and his new DVD “Snowmen.”
R: Please tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
J: I am a professional actor. I have been acting since I was 5 yrs old. I have appeared in over 10 feature films including Nancy Drew, Big Mommas House 2 , The Greatest Game Ever Played, Ace Ventura Jr, License to Wed and now Snowmen. I am a senior in HS and I have an older brother named Scott and 2 dogs, Lucy and Richter.
R: Tell us a little bit about who you got into the acting business?
J: My mom introduced me to a local talent manager Tamara Markowitz of TM Talent here in NJ when I was 5 and the rest is history.
R: Tell us about your up and coming dvd “Snowmen.”
J : In Snowmen, there are a lot of twists and turns and surprises. It’s a journey of one boy who thinks his cancer comes back and wants to do something to be remembered. He encounters bullies along the way and I am the lead bully Jason. I don’t want to give away the ending but it is amazing.
R: What was the audition process like for this movie? Where were you when you found out that you got the part?
J: The Director Rob Kirbyson had seen me in another movie I had done and knew who I was. He was like, do you think Josh would do it if we asked him to? So I read the script and fell in love with it and the character Jason, which I play. And I think I was at home when I found out I had gotten the part.
R: What was it like working with Christopher Lloyd? Did he five you any advice when you were filming?
J: I didn’t have any scenes with Christopher Lloyd unfortunately but the other kids all said he was really great and they enjoyed working with him.
R: There has been a lot of remakes of older movies lately. If you could remake a movie, which one would it be and what actor would you like to play?
J: If I could pick a remake of a movie, it would probably be the Blues Brothers or Animal House. Of course I would play the John Belushi roles!
R: Tell is about the North Shore Animal League.
J: I have been involved with the North Shore Animal League now for many years and they are a wonderful organization that helps to save the lives of many dogs and cats that might have otherwise been killed. They are a no kill animal shelter that helps to find good adoptive homes for these animals. I have been a part of the Muttigrees program for the past few years and I help the organization get the word out to adopt these wonderful dogs and cats. They also get medical attention to those abandoned animals that need it,
R: Tell us about the ‘Bullying… we’re Kickin It’ campaign and your involvement.
J: I have just started working with Kickin It. It’s a national organization started here near me in NJ by and woman named Gina Marie. She is so passionate about what she does that it’s contagious. I visited the after school program where some kids go to talk about what they are going through and I have also helped out at events- like the one we had recently in NYC at the Hard Rock Café. I also participated in a kickball game at my school to kick out bullying. Kickin It empowers kids to be strong and to feel good about themselves and teaches them self worth and how they are important in the world and to not let bullies stand in their way.
R: Who are your favorite bands and singers? What are your favorite songs by each one?
J: My favorite band right now has to be COLDPLAY..Chris Martin is amazing .I love the song Paradise from Mylo Xyloto. That’s their new album.
Also I have to say I really like a lot of different artists. Jay Z, Kanye West , Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mike..I also love the older music from bands like the Beatles, Queen and Led Zeppelin.R: What are your future goals?
J: Right now I have acting for sure in my future. I can’t see myself doing anything else. Maybe directing or producing films one day also. I have applied to five colleges right now so I have a lot of decisions to make this year.
R: What is the best advice you have ever gotten and by who?
J: When I was younger my mom always taught me not to get upset if I didn’t get a movie or some sort of job because it probably meant something better was waiting for me down the road. I try to always keep that in mind so I don’t get bummed out if I don’t get something. Also to always be myself and not try to be something you’re not. Just be real and honest and people will respect you more.
R: What advice would you give someone who wanted to become an actor?
J: My advice is to believe in your self and to never give up. If acting is your passion then do it, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t or that it’s impossible. Nothing is impossible.
R: Other than this one, what is the strangest question you have ever been asked?
J: Have you always been this height?
R: Are you on any social networking sites? If so, which ones and what are their addresses? Do you have an official website? If so, what is the address?
J: yes you can find me on twitter @josh_flitter. I also have a website www.joshflitter.com
R: Is there anything else you would like to add or say to your fans?
J: Please follow me on twitter..it’s the best way for my fans to keep in the loop on what I am doing now and in the future..
R: Josh, thank you for the interview. Have a great day.

Josh Flitter Interview
We step away once again here on PEV from the concert stage and onto the big screen with our latest feature, up and coming 17-year-old actor Josh Flitter. He got his start in commercials, but has taken it up a few notches since appearing in his first movie, The Greatest Game Ever Playedat the age of 10. He’s been pretty busy since then, most recently playing a great part in the upcoming flick, Snowmen.
Flitter says of the work “There are a lot of twists and turns and surprises. It’s a journey of one boy who thinks his cancer comes back and wants to do something to be remembered. He encounters bullies along the way and I play the lead bully Jason. I don’t want to give away the ending but it is amazing.” Check it out for sure – it’s actually an ironic role for Josh, who works regularly as part of the anti-bullying campaign, “Kickin It”. Good stuff. Check out Snowmen and keep an eye out for his next movie, (a horror flick!) titled Hallows Eve. There’s much more to get into, so keep reading for all the answers to the XXQ’s.
XXQs: Josh FlitterPensEyeView.com (PEV): At only 17 years old, you have movies and TV under your belt How do you manage it all?
Josh Flitter (JF): Actually it was crazy over the past 12 years, but my parents have kept me on track. I am still in my High School in Marlboro NJ. My parents felt that it was best to stay here in NJ and not to move to LA because they wanted me to stay grounded. We have a fantastic school system and they have been great at giving me all my work to stay up with my class for when I return from filming. It all seems to flow and it works out great.
PEV: What kind of music and acting were you into growing up? Was anyone your main influence?
JF: I am into a diverse amount of music. I love everything from Coldplay to Jay Z and Kanye West. I also grew up listening to the classics like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. As for movies , I am also diverse there too. I love Comedy and Drama, Some of my favorite films are Shawshank Redemption , The Social Network and The Hangover. My influences range from Robin Williams whom I was lucky enough to work with in License to Wed to Jessie Eisenberg who is more near my generation
PEV: What was it like for you when you first started out in the entertainment business and trying to make a name for yourself? Any “war stories” from those early years – even at 17?
JF: At the beginning of my career it was really a fun time for me. I was young so I didn’t really know the business side of it all. I did a bunch of commercials and got lucky when I landed my first big movie,The Greatest Game Ever Played, when I was ten. Really no “war stories” to tell. Just that sometimes we would run into NYC 5 days a week during school and I was having to be pulled out constantly. That was really hard, the running around.PEV: Do you remember the first time you thought to yourself – “I am really onto something!”?
JF: I think I knew pretty young that this was meant for me and I was meant to be an actor. From a very early age I could walk into a room and wow people. I wasn’t scared at all, In fact I wanted to do it and when I was bad my mom would threaten me that she wouldn’t take me on any more auditions if I didn’t behave .
PEV: With that, what can fans expect from a Josh Flitter performance?
JF: Fans can expect 100% and more from me. When I act I try to reach my audience in a way where they can relate. I love to make people laugh and cry and I know that’s a gift so I am very appreciative for that. I want to give my fans the best possible performance that I can.PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage to perform or when the director yells, “Action!”?
JF: I need to be in the moment. I am always listening to the director because I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. Time is money and you know how that goes.
PEV: Any pre-show/pre-scene rituals before you perform a scene?
JF: Before I do a scene I just t think about what the character must be going through at that time and I prepare that way. I don’t get too serious about that yet but if it’s a dramatic scene, those are challenging. I have to think of something sad before I do the scene and then put it into the moment.
PEV: Tell us about your anti-bullying campaign you are working on.
JF: I have just started working with Kickin It. It’s a national organization started here (near me )in NJ by and woman named GinaMarie. She is so passionate about what she does that it’s contagious. I visited the after school program where some kids go to talk about what they are going through and I have also helped out at events. We just had one in NYC at the Hard Rock Café in Time Square. I also participated in a kickball game at my school to help ‘kick away’ bullying.PEV: You are once again hitting the big screen in the upcoming film “Snowmen” about three unlikely heroes and the winter that changed their lives forever. What can fans expect from this work?
JF: In Snowmen, there are a lot of twists and turns and surprises. It’s a journey of one boy who thinks his cancer comes back and wants to do something to be remembered. He encounters bullies along the way and I play the lead bully Jason. I don’t want to give away the ending but it is amazing.
PEV: Do you ever find yourself getting nervous and if so, how do you get over that?
JF: Nope I really don’t ever get nervous .I think I actually thrive on the rush from acting. I love every minute of it and miss it when I am not working. Bring it on!
PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about Josh Flitter?
JF: The one surprise about me is that I am a HUGE dog lover and hockey lover. I love the NY Rangers, if you don’t already know that, and I am very serious about non kill shelters for animals, I do a lot of charity work for the North Shore Animal League too.PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew you wanted one day for this to be a career for you?
JF: From the beginning. From my first audition I knew this was for me.
PEV: What one word best describes Josh Flitter?
JF: driven!
PEV: How is life on the road for you as a working actor? Best and worst parts?JF: Life on the road has mixed emotions. I miss my dad, brother, dogs and friends when I am away, but I have gotten to meet so many new people and see so many new places because of the traveling. I feel it has helped me to be the person I am today. I have had so many more experiences than other kids I know.
PEV: Is there one area you wish you could travel to on location that you have not yet?
JF: Hawaii or London are the two places I would love to travel to.
PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time?
JF: In my spare time I like hanging out with my friends. We film our own movies so that’s cool. I also like to play roller hockey and listen to great music and play some video games.PEV: Is there an up- and -coming artist you think we should all be looking out for now? Music? Acting?
JF: Upcoming artist in music I would have to say J. Cole. Upcoming in Acting.. ME of course!PEV: If you weren’t doing this now what do you think you would be doing as your career?
JF: I think I would do something in science. I am very interested in that.PEV: So, what is next for Josh Flitter?
JF: Currently I am working on a horror movie called Hallows Eve. A friend of mine was doing it and asked if I would be the comic relief. How funny is that!Source: Pens Eye View

Students "Dropkick" Bullying
Marlboro High School students joined together to knockout bullying at a charity kickball game this weekend.
No matter what age, everyone loves a good game of kickball. And when the game raises awareness for a cause like Kickin' It and the fight against bullying, the game becomes that much sweeter.
Students were joined by WWE Hall of Famer Rocky "Soulman" Johnson, father of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Marlboro native, actor, and MHS senior Josh Flitter.
Flitter has appeared in movies such as "License to Wed" with Robin Williams and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." This winter, he will star as, funny enough, a bully in the upcoming movie "Snowmen."
The national campaign helps children and teenagers who are bullied, by encouraging positive outlooks through positive mediums. The organization has teen and adult mentors on call for those bullied, including Flitter and Johnson.
"Our students need to see that its okay to fail, as long as you try your hardest," said GinaMarie Raimondo, president of Kickin' It. "And as long as you have something to look forward to for another day, and that's what we provide in the campaign."
The event was sponsored by local and regional businesses such as Stewarts and Games2U, and corporate giants Tic Tac.

Movie review: 'Snowmen'
“Snowmen” has far more going on than its fluffy exterior suggests. A small-scale family film with a limited release schedule, “Snowmen” nevertheless has all the characteristics of a perennial television favorite, and after it blows through theaters, perhaps it will achieve that status.
Robert Kirbyson's directorial debut, now showing at AMC Crossroads 16, stars newcomer Bobby Coleman as Billy Kirkfield, a boy whose recent rounds of chemotherapy necessitate his wearing a knit cap wherever he goes in his snow-filled Midwestern town. Billy and his friends Howard (Bobb'e J. Thompson of “Role Models”) and Lucas (Christian Martyn) are careening around snowbanks one day when they dislodge a minor avalanche, revealing the body of an old man.

Even in a place where the snow is several feet deep and the drifts look like ski slopes, this event still shakes up the town, and Billy, whose sense of his own mortality is magnified far beyond the scope of his buddies, feels that he must respect the honor of this old, forgotten gentleman by doing something bold with the time he has left. Several ideas get thwarted by Jason Bound (Josh Flitter), a hulking bully preying on his younger and smaller schoolmates, but then he sets his sights on a goal: breaking the record set in Japan for the number of snowmen in a single space.
As anyone who studies video store shelves knows, far too many brain-dead kid comedies are set in winter wonderlands, and yet “Snowmen” is an unusually well-crafted story about achievement against odds that takes some uncommon chances with its telling. For one, Billy announces in voice-over narration near the beginning that he eventually will die in this story. A thoughtful and nuanced view of death pervades “Snowmen,” and there are children in the film who treat the subject with total insensitivity. This breaks two cardinal rules in modern children's films: (1) viewers should never doubt that everything will be all right, and (2) the line between simple bullying and outright sociopath behavior should not be crossed.
Such is the plight of “Snowmen.” Christopher Lloyd delivers a memorable cameo performance as the caretaker of the local cemetery, offering sage advice to young boys attempting to wrap their minds around the concept of death. This is not typical material. And yet, the material, which is light and funny as often as it is somber, attracted performers such as Ray Liotta (as Billy's goofy salesman father) and Lloyd, both of whom probably took pay cuts.
But the better children's movies, the ones that show how children really behave, are the ones that endure. “A Christmas Story” made almost no money in its theatrical run but is now seen as a classic. It's doubtful that this film will warrant round-the-clock marathons, but because it goes outside the lines a little, “Snowmen” should not be frozen out.

Fox Buys 'Prodigy Bully' Comedy From Mike O'Malley And John Wells
Fox is teaming with Glee co-star Mike O’Malley for another school comedy. The network has bought Prodigy Bully, a half-hour comedy written by O’Malley and executive produced by John Wells. Based on the Prodigy Bully one-minute movies by Hank Perlman, the comedy centers on a young boy genius who uses his brains and brawn to get whatever he wants. John Wells Prods and Warner Bros TV are producing, with Wells, Paris Barclay and JWP’s Andrew Stearn executive producing and O’Malley co-executive producing. JWP and WBTV first took a stab at developing a single-camera comedy based on the Prodigy Bully shorts during the 2005-2006 season. Titled Prodigy/Bully, the project went to pilot at NBC, with Perlman and Steve Elliott writing, Perlman directing, Wells, Barclay and Jon Feldman executive producing and Josh Flitter playing the lead, 9-year-old Henry Tammer. Fox has had success in the past with a single-camera comedy about a boy genius, the long-running Malcolm In The Middle. O’Malley’s relationship with WBTV and John Wells stems from his current writing gig on the Showtime drama series Shameless, which Warner Bros produces and Wells co-wrote and executive produces. As a writer, O’Malley, repped by CAA and Principato-Young, also has a script development deal with 20th and Ryan Murphy. He recently wrote and produced the indie Certainty, which last month won Best Screenplay, Best Ensemble Cast and Best Editing at the Boston Film Festival.

Celeb Scoop: Josh Flitter
Seventeen-year-old Josh Flitter has been acting most of his life, starring in comedies such as "Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective" and the "Buddies" films (playing the voice of Budderball). Recently, Josh took on a role in the upcoming movie "Snowmen" that asked him to step away from being a Funny Kid and try something less than appealing: a bully.
We had fun talking to Josh about this challenging role and his take on the issue of bullying.
IML: Hi Josh! Tell us a little bit about "Snowmen" and about the character you play. It looks like a great movie.
Josh: "Snowmen" is a family film that deals with some elements that aren't typically shown in family films. It really tugs at your emotions. It'll make you laugh and cry. Billy, the main character, is diagnosed with cancer when he's very young, and when he turns about ten or eleven, he beats it, and is in remission. And then, when he becomes sick and assumes he has cancer again, he decides that he wants to be remembered in some way. So he and his friends decide to set the world's record for the amount or snowmen built in one day.
So the character I play in the movie, Jason, is actually the bully, and he doesn't want Billy to be remembered. My character thinks that he's the only person in the school who should be respected and cared about, so when the other kids are building the snowmen, I destroy them, and insult the kid. But this is all just a front, and I have deep inner emotions and characteristics that make Jason much deeper. Usually the bully in family movies is shown is a sort of "PG rated" way. And there's nothing wrong with that. But this movie is special, because there's so much more that this kid is going through. There's one scene that gets very edgy, and it's really scary, but in a good way. In a way that some kids will need to see to know that bullying is bad. And that's why it's so great to have this movie, because anti-bullying is huge right now. And it's so important in the lives of so many people. You get to see what some of the repercussions of bullying are.
IML: It sounds like the movie explores the motivations behind bullying, and why your character acts the way he does. How did you prepare for that?
Josh: It's funny, because at first the director was reluctant for me to audition, because he'd seen me in other things, and he thought I was the "funny guy" and didn't know if I could pull this kind of thing off. So when I went and auditioned, he was really kind of taken aback. I just took from the feelings I'd get if I was really angry at my brother or something, but to a point where you're almost saddened by how angry you are, instead of just being enraged. So I actually have multiple emotions happening at once. So it was more about that than about research. I just dove into my own mind and picked out little things here and there.
IML: Have you ever had any personal experiences with bullying?
Josh: I'm seventeen and I'm five-foot-two, and most of my friends are taller than I am, so I was picked on for that. But luckily, in my school system, and where I've grown up, everyone has been great. I don't think we've had many accounts of bullying. It used to be that schools would just allow that to happen...it was common. But now they've realized what some of the real repercussions are, and how teen suicides are skyrocketing, and they need to do something. So they really dove into it and are teaching kids that what you say really could affect someone.
IML: It sounds like your school's policy is working. What are they doing right?
Josh: We would have these school assemblies that were like tough-love sorts of things. Instead of sugar-coating it and saying things like "bullying is mean," they would really show us. When you hear real true stories of kids who were teased, and were always laughing it off, and never had any problem with it, and then one day, they're gone...I think of stuff like, "What if that happened to one of my good friends? What if we found out that he just couldn't take it anymore?" That really affected us. We'll still poke fun at each other here and there, being friends, but in the end, we say, "We were just kidding, we don't really mean that. We all love you." But what's really bad is talking behind someone's back. People will always do that and just say, "It's just gossip." But what happens when someone just doesn't come to school one day?
IML: You're definitely passionate about that issue! We hear you're also passionate about animal welfare issues and pet adoptions.
Josh: I am! I have two dogs of my own, and I've always asked myself, "Why not show love for animals?" Because they will always love you, so why not help the ones that are helpless? The ones that have nothing to live for? When animals are beaten and abused, given up and thrown out on the street...these animals need you. I'm trying to use my celebrity status to connect with other kids and tell them how they can help. I volunteer to help with animal adoptions, and young kids will walk up to me and ask me about my movies, and I'll say things like, "Yeah that movie was good, but you know what's a lot of fun? This dog!" And the feeling I get when I see someone adopting a pet that I was showing them...It's the greatest feeling in the world, because I just gave another pet a house to live in, and a family to wake up to, rather than a cage. And people have to realize that it's not about getting a specific breed... it's about getting a dog or cat that loves you, and a pet that you love. Knowing that I've saved as many pets as I have, it really helps me feel good about myself. We all see cats and dogs every day, but we forget about the ones that don't have homes. So I encourage other kids to help out with local organizations that adopt out dogs and cats, or to adopt one themselves!
IML: Thanks for talking with us, Josh! Good luck with everything!
Josh: Thank you!
"Snowmen" opens in theatres as part of a limited engagement on October 21. For more info, check out www.snowmenmovie.com.Source: PBSKids.org

New US Trailer and Poster for Snowmen
Here’s a rather scary looking image! Did you ever think that Doc Brown and Henry Hill from Goodfella’s would act in the same movie? Neither did I, yet here we have Christopher Lloyd and Ray Liotta side by side in a new movie called Snowmen which is ready and waiting to be released this Christmas. The movie is directed by Robert Kirbysonand also stars Bobby Coleman, Bobb’e J. Thompson, Christian Martyn and Josh Flitter.
I’ll let the synopsis do the talking but it looks like it’s released in the US 21st October and was out in the UK in May. Completely passed me by as I’ve never heard of it!
SNOWMEN is a humorous and heartfelt coming-of-age story about three unlikely heroes and the winter that changed their lives forever. After a surprising discovery in the snow catapults three small-town boys into the spotlight, the best friends hatch a plan to be remembered forever by setting a Guinness World Records(R) title. Along the way, the trio battles schoolyard bullies, unites their community and discovers that – while fame may be fleeting – true friendship lasts forever.
