Josh Flitter Horton Hears a Who
In this big-screen adaptation of Dr. Seuss's classic story, I voiced the character of Rudy, a kangaroo who helps Horton save the Whos of Whoville. In case you don't know the story, it's about an imaginative elephant named Horton (Jim Carrey) who hears cries for help coming from a speck of dust floating through the air. Even though everyone around him thinks he’s crazy, Horton believes there could be life on this particle and wants to help. Soon Horton realizes that he's discovered the home of tiny creatures called the Whos, and he promises the Mayor of Whoville (Steve Carell) that he'll protect the community. But Horton's neighbors don't believe him—Kangaroo (Carol Burnett) wants Horton to stop talking about it altogether because she thinks he’s filling the children’s head with ridiculous ideas. But Horton stands by his word, living up to his motto: "A person is a person, no matter how small."
Kangaroo does everything in her power to get rid of the problem once and for all, including turning all the other animals against Horton and stealing the speck from him. But her son Rudy (my character) hears the Whos' cries and returns the speck to Horton. All the animals, including Kangaroo, realize their mistake and help Horton carry the Whos to safety.
Working on an animated film is so much different than working on a live-action feature. Instead of reading the lines together, all the actors work separately—it’s amazing the way it all comes together in the end. Every day you go into a four-foot by two-foot both and speak into a microphone and just go crazy! I wish I could have worked with Jim Carrey and Steve Carell in person on this movie, but it was still very cool to be involved in a project with them.
